Earn CME Credits
The official journal of the American Institute of
Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), the Journal of
Ultrasound in Medicine (JUM) offers educational activities for
physicians, sonographers, and radiologic technologists through CME tests
and manuscript reviews.
CME Tests
Each monthly issue of the JUM offers 2 or 3 CME tests. One CME credit will be
awarded for successful completion of each test with a grade of 70% or
higher (ie, at least 7 correct answers). Participants will be able to
download a form certifying receipt of credits earned. Credit for each test
is available for 3 years from the first of the month in which the test is
published.
Designation Statement: The AIUM designates each JUM CME test for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credit.
Manuscript Reviews
Individuals may receive credit for reviewing JUM manuscripts. Reviewers
must complete a set of review questions and a self-assessment and
evaluation form that documents their educational process.
Designation Statement: The AIUM designates each
accepted manuscript review for a maximum of 3
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Reviewers
may earn a maximum of 15 credits per calendar year for all journal
manuscript reviews completed.
Target Audience
The JUM’s educational activities are designed to meet the needs
of those who perform and interpret diagnostic ultrasound studies. They are
also designed for practicing ultrasound professionals as a review of the
latest information in the field.
Educational Objective
The goal of JUM educational activities is to provide
medical ultrasound professionals with the most up-to-date and practical
information they need to increase their knowledge and skills in the field,
as well as increase their ability to accurately recognize and diagnose
various abnormalities by ultrasound. Through the JUM’s educational
activities, we strive to improve the practice of medical ultrasound and
increase the quality and safety of patient care.
Accreditation Statement
The AIUM is accredited by the Accreditation Council
for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical
education for physicians. AIUM educational activities are planned and
implemented in accordance with ACCME Essentials Areas and Elements.
Credits for Physician Participants
Physicians participating in JUM educational activities may earn AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits.
Credits for Sonographer and Radiologic Technologist
Participants
Sonographers and radiologic technologists
participating in JUM educational activities may earn credits toward maintaining
their professional certification from the following organizations:
ARDMS
Sonographers may use credits earned from AIUM
educational activities to maintain their certification with the American
Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). ARDMS accepts AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits.
ARRT
The AIUM is a Recognized Continuing Education
Evaluation Mechanism (RCEEM) for the American Registry of Radiologic
Technologists (ARRT). AIUM educational activities are approved by the AIUM
for ARRT Category A credits.
Documenting CME Credits
Participants that have successfully completed an
online JUM CME test
will be able to download and print a CME certificate. Those completing a JUM CME test on paper will be
mailed a CME certificate. Participants that have successfully completed the
JUM manuscript
review process will be mailed a CME certificate. The AIUM does not submit
credits to regulating bodies or certifying organizations on behalf of the
participant. It is the participant’s responsibility to submit proof
of credits on his or her own behalf.
AIUM Disclosure Policy
As a sponsor accredited by the ACCME to provide AMA PRA Category 1 Credits to
physicians, the AIUM must ensure balance, independence, and scientific
rigor in all of its sponsored activities.
To this end, the AIUM requires anyone who is in a
position to control the content of an educational activity, including AIUM
officers, board members, committee members, faculty, and AIUM staff, to
disclose all relevant financial interest(s) or other relationship(s) with
any commercial interest.
Financial interest or other relationships may include
such things as grants or research support, employment, consultancies, major
stock holdings, membership in a speakers bureau, etc. The ACCME defines
“relevant financial relationships” as financial relationships
in any amount occurring within the past 12 months that create a conflict of
interest (SCS2.1). The ACCME considers relationships of the person involved
in the CME activity to include financial relationships of a spouse or
partner.
The intent of this disclosure is not to prevent
individuals with significant financial or other relationships from
participating in the planning or presentation of AIUM educational
activities but rather to provide learners with information to aid them in
making their own judgments.
AIUM Alternative or “Off-Label” Product
Policy
The AIUM requires anyone who is in a position to
control the content of an educational activity, including AIUM officers,
board members, committee members, faculty, authors, and AIUM staff, to
disclose their endorsement or use of any alternative or
“off-label” product and/or treatment technologies. Any input
provided during planning, as well as articles and presentations (live
and/or video) on such products or technologies, represents the opinion of
the individual and does not necessarily reflect the views and policies of
the AIUM. Individuals are advised that it is their responsibility to inform
the audience if their presentations or articles include any discussion of
off-label product use.
AIUM educational activities provide a forum to
educate and promote the dissemination of new ideas, but the AIUM does not
necessarily endorse the findings or conclusions reported by the presenters
and authors.
AIUM Conflict of Interest Policy
To effectively manage a potential conflict of
interest, the AIUM must know about relevant financial relationship(s) or
other relationship(s) with commercial interests prior to the activity being
developed and delivered to the learners.
The AIUM has instituted a process that goes beyond
simple disclosure, with necessary interventions to resolve conflict of
interest implemented before the activity. Everyone participating in the
planning and/or presentation of an AIUM educational activity is required to
complete a disclosure form. Anyone that refuses to disclose relevant
financial relationship(s) or other relationship(s) will be disqualified
from their role in planning and/or speaking at an AIUM educational
activity.
1. A disclosure form is to be completed by all those
responsible for the planning of CME activities. All potential conflicts of
interest must be identified and managed by the chair of the CME Committee
or designated official prior to the planning of the program.
2. Each author or invited speaker must complete a
disclosure form and any potential conflict of interest identified as it
pertains to the content of the presentation. Should it be determined that a
conflict of interest exists as a result of a financial relationship(s) or
other relationship(s) the author or speaker may have, that individual will
be contacted by the designated official, and methods to manage the conflict
will be discussed prior to the activity. A form will be available to
expedite this process.
