The sylvian fissure: a commonly mislabeled cranial landmark

The bright echo in which the middle cerebral artery pulsates has been termed by many authors the "sylvian fissure." The authors present anatomic, embryologic, and sonographic evidence that this terminology is inappropriate, and that the correct term should be "insula."
